Our Lady of Mercy

15th century
Wood, polychrome
From a workshop in the Marches, Italy
Albani Diocesan Museum, Urbino, Italy
("Deposito Galleria Nazionale delle Marche")

In this simplified application of the Our Lady of Mercy type the crown and angels are dispensed with as the Virgin looks down calmly at the nuns sheltering in her cape. Her mantle, traditionally blue, is a little greenish in this photograph; the red robe is also traditional.
